Snapshots of Australia
Rail transport in 1900- the most common form of power were steam powered engines, they would be used for sea and land transport, but could only be used where tracks were laid. They could carry lots of people and freight. Another type of transport was animal power, mainly horses which were used to pull carts, in Australia most of the transport of people and goods from train stations were by horse, particularly in the country. Sea transport was being changed, as sailing ships were disappearing as more steam ships were being made, these ships were becoming the new trend because it wasn’t dependent on the wind, also the only way to travel to another country was by sea before air travel came around. The first internal combustion powered vehicle was designed by Karl Benz in 1885, and ran on fuel instead of steam which helped make it more powerful The first built and used car in Australia was by the Shearer brothers, this on the other hand was a steam car and was driven from Bathurst to Melbourne arriving on the 4th of May 1900. In 1910 it was very common in the Western world to see motor cars and motor trucks, but the roads were not yet developed. There was more demand for public transport during the 1800’s and this is when trams were made to help transport people, but were also good because it was faster and cheaper, the first electric tram in Sydney was in December 1899. The first pedal bicycle was invented in the 1860’s, but in the 1890’s bicycles with proper tires and brakes were made, these also turned out to be very popular as they were safer and more comfortable to ride. The first air flight trip to occur in Sydney was on the 12th of November 1894, and was endeavored by a man called Lawrence Hargrave, when he flew in a large box kite that he had made himself. The first powered airplane flight in Australia was on the 9th of December 1909 by Colin Defries, when he began his flight in Melbourne but failed to stay in the air long or travel far.

George Street, Haymarket, Sydney

Picture
In this picture there are quite a few horsedrawn carts riding along dirt roads. There are also factories and buildings along the sides of the street, these buildings also have writing on the side of the walls. You can see the difference between the carts as the one on the left does not have a roof but the one on the right does, the one on the left may belong to a lower rranked citizen or be for work purposes as it has a barrel on the back, the one on the right probably belongs to a citizen in the upper class. It looks like the city was getting developed overtime as you can see lots of buildings and factories placed there.
