Snapshots of Australia

Picture
The living conditions in the early 1900’s are extremely different to those of today.
Firstly the women wore a number of layers of clothing.
They wore a corset giving them an hourglass figure, secondly a long petticoat to add width to the body and assist the structure of the dress or skirt.
Then a long dress or top and skirt were put over the top and the skirt or dress would have a hoop at the bottom to make it sit out.
The men would wear a formal suit, which was considered everyday clothing.
Both men and women wore hats except only men took their hats off indoors.

During the time period of the early 1900’s, Australia was known as the most urbanised country of the world. 50% of people lived in the city and the other 50% lived in the country on farms, country towns or mine fields and over two thirds of the population lived in New South Wales and Victoria. (500,000 lived in Melbourne and Sydney).

The image up the top shows a group of men and women at work. It tells us that the lives of Australian’s are very different today because in the early 20th century people had hard working and living conditions. They barely had any time do hang out and have fun, due to the long hours of working to provide for the family or looking after the children and doing the house chores. Most people did not have enough money to play a sport or learn an instrument and because of this many social problems occurred in society. Such social problems include laziness for work so men might go to the pub and gamble for a fast and easy way to earn big money with little effort, committing crimes such as robbery was another problem in society as yet again it was a quick, fast and easy way to earn money provide for a family. Thus low income and lazy men would spend all their money on illegal bets, and lose everything, ending up in jail.

Sometimes the problems of society got so bad children of the lower and working classes were forced to leave school, their education, and future in order to survive as their family needed more support in order to survive and provide for their family, so the children would leave and then find a job and get paid at a minimum wage for their families. Some people in the upper class of society thought that when children leave their schooling life they did not learn discipline.

This is tells us that we are fortunate to be living the lives we do today, but many of us still face the same consequences people had to face back in the day for choosing / forced to make illegal decisions to survive as society still has not come up with a solution to poverty.
